Traditional Culture Today

Traditional Culture Today

Andrea Andersen "This was taken this February while on a JCR outing. The traditional Inuit culture of snowshoes, with a modern twist of rubber straps (a more modern usage today),"
Sarah Taylor "This photo was taken in Old Town, Yellowknife, at the intersection of Franklin Avenue & Weaver Road, facing the ice road. This photograph is representative of Traditional Culture Today because it identifies an aspect of culture that hearkens to Yellowknife past, yet is still present today. The ice road, shacks, house boat, dogs, living close to the elements and enjoying the simpler life. In this photo, 2 people have stopped to have a chat, and they look so small in the vastness of the frozen outdoors which surrounds them."
Alice Qisiiq "Little girl in igloo. (Ceci est une photo de mon amie Piitsi dans un iglou.)"
Chloé Duval "Cueillette de canneberges "
Tyler Heal "Nora, an elder from the Yellowknife area demonstrates the proper way to dress a whitefish (from Great Slave Lake) as part of a presentation to NWT teachers on how to incorporate traditional culture into their instruction. "
Benjamin Beaudoin "A Cessna Caravan airplane on floats making its final approach on Great Slave Lake in Yellowknife. Aviation is a vital mode of transportation to this day, to outlying communities."
Heidi O'Connor-Brook "This photo shows respect and admiration towards the natural world. This is traditional culture that was and always will be important to our culture."
Kristine Mannilaq "Picture of an igloo, taken just outside of Taloyoak."
Erika Luckert "In Dawson City, everywhere I looked I saw contrasts between the old and the new. I was particularly struck by this image, with the bright orange plastic placed almost offensively against the silvered wood structure. If you look closely at the bottom right of the photo, you can see a sign that says DO NOT ENTER. To me, this photograph is representative of an appraoch to our heritage. Traditional culture may be in danger of collapse, but if all we do is fence it off and prohibit access, then its condition is of no consequence at all really, for nothing can be appreciated properly when it is surrounded by orange plastic fences."
Haley Smith "Memories of Tapkak - taken on the shore of the Beaufort Sea at Shingle Point, Yukon in July 2008. Picture of Inuvialuit Grandmother, Alice Hunter enjoying a long walk at her traditional summer camp for over the last 40 years."
Patricia Lyall "A man kneeled down on his knees not looking at the camera making tea in front of a snow shield with cooler boxes beside him."
Zander Affleck "Boat in Antarctica"
